Tropical Geometry

Job: combinatorial shadow of algebraic geometry over the tropical semiring — polyhedral “varieties,” degeneration limits, and correspondence theorems linking tropical counts to classical enumerative geometry.

Core

Tropical geometry replaces \((\mathbb{C},+,\times)\) by the tropical semiring \((\mathbb{R}\cup\{\infty\},\min,+)\) (or \(\max\) convention), turning algebraic hypersurfaces into polyhedral complexes. It packages non-Archimedean skeletons, degenerations, and a calculus of balancing weights used in enumerative geometry and mirror symmetry.

Layer Content
Semiring \(\mathbb{T}=(\mathbb{R}\cup\{\infty\},\oplus,\odot)\)

Kapranov amoebas / non-Archimedean amoebas \(\to\) tropical hypersurfaces
Correspondence tropical curve counts \(\leftrightarrow\) algebraic GW / Severi
Applications mirror SYZ bases; optimization; phylogenetics pointers

Notation (paper-standard)

  • \(\oplus=\min\), \(\odot=+\); \(\operatorname{trop}(V)\), \(\operatorname{Val}:K^\times\to\mathbb{R}\)
  • Balanced weighted polyhedral complexes; multiplicity \(m_\sigma\)
  • Amoeba \(\mathcal{A}(V)=\operatorname{Log}|V|\subset\mathbb{R}^n\)

See it

Tropical line in \(\mathbb{R}^2\). The tropical polynomial \(“x\oplus y\oplus 0”=\min(x,y,0)\) has corner locus three rays from the origin along the directions \((-1,0)\), \((0,-1)\), \((1,1)\), balanced with weight 1 — the combinatorial type of a linear \(\mathbb{P}^1\) in the toric surface. Through two general points in \(\mathbb{R}^2\) there is a unique tropical line; three general lines meet in one point — classical Bézout shadows.

Check

Why does the balancing condition appear for \(\operatorname{trop}(V(f))\) of a hypersurface?

Around a codimension-1 cell, the primitive outgoing directions of adjacent top-dimensional faces, weighted by lattice lengths / multiplicities from initial forms, sum to zero — a consequence of the fact that the initial ideal / face polynomials define equidimensional cycles of degree matching, or equivalently Stokes / residue cancellation for the defining equation’s leading terms.

What fails if one ignores multiplicities in a tropical enumerative count?

Unweighted ray counts need not equal algebraic curve counts; Mikhalkin correspondence requires lattice lengths and vertex multiplicities (and often a complex/real phase structure) to match GW or Severi degrees.

Pitfalls

  • Min vs max conventions flip signs and dualize polyhedra — always state the convention.
  • Set-theoretic tropicalization vs scheme-theoretic / multiplicity-weighted structure.
  • Embedded vs abstract tropical curves: abstract metric graphs with legs vs balanced images in \(\mathbb{R}^n\).
