\(\infty\)-Operads, \(\mathbb{E}_n\), and Little Disks¶
Job: encode homotopy-coherent algebraic structures (associative, commutative, \(\mathbb{E}_n\)) via \(\infty\)-operads; connect little disks to factorization homology and deformation theory.
Core¶
From operads to \(\infty\)-operads¶
A classical operad \(\mathcal{O}\) in spaces/chain complexes packages operations \(\mathcal{O}(n)\) with symmetric group actions and composition trees. An \(\infty\)-operad (Lurie, HA) is a generalization where composition is homotopy-coherent: modeled as a map of \(\infty\)-categories \(p:\mathcal{O}^\otimes\to\mathrm{N}(\mathrm{Fin}_*)\) (finite pointed sets) satisfying inert/coCartesian lifting conditions — the \(\infty\)-version of a colored operad / multicategory.
| Structure | Meaning |
|---|---|
| \(\mathbb{E}_1\simeq\mathrm{As}\) | \(A_\infty\): homotopy associative |
| \(\mathbb{E}_\infty\simeq\mathrm{Comm}\) | \(E_\infty\): homotopy commutative |
| \(\mathbb{E}_n\) | intermediate coherence (\(n\)-disk operad) |
| \(\mathrm{LM}\), \(\mathrm{RM}\), \(\mathrm{BM}\) | left/right/bimodules over \(\mathbb{E}_1\) |
Algebras. An \(\mathcal{O}\)-algebra in a symmetric monoidal \(\infty\)-category \(\mathcal{C}^\otimes\) is a map of \(\infty\)-operads \(\mathcal{O}^\otimes\to\mathcal{C}^\otimes\). Examples: \(\mathbb{E}_1\)-algebras in \(\mathrm{Sp}=\) \(A_\infty\)-ring spectra; \(\mathbb{E}_\infty\)-algebras \(=\) commutative ring spectra (up to the model).
Little disks operad¶
The little \(n\)-disks operad \(\mathcal{E}_n\) has \(\mathcal{E}_n(k)=\) space of \(k\) rectilinear (or framed variants) embeddings of disks \(D^n\hookrightarrow D^n\) with disjoint interiors. Composition \(=\) insert configurations.
Theorem (Boardman–Vogt, May, …; \(\infty\)-upgrade in HA). Algebras over \(\mathcal{E}_n\) in topological spaces are \(n\)-fold loop spaces (grouplike case: recognition principle). In chain complexes / spectra, \(\mathbb{E}_n\)-algebras interpolate between associative (\(n=1\)) and commutative (\(n\to\infty\)).
| \(n\) | Homotopy-algebraic content |
|---|---|
| \(1\) | \(A_\infty\); Hochschild cochains act |
| \(2\) | braid / Gerstenhaber phenomena (Deligne conjecture) |
| \(\infty\) | \(\mathbb{E}_\infty\); Power operations; TAQ |
Additivity (Dunn–Lurie). \(\mathbb{E}_n\otimes\mathbb{E}_m\simeq\mathbb{E}_{n+m}\) as \(\infty\)-operads — little disks add dimensions under Boardman–Vogt tensor product.
Deligne conjecture / Kontsevich formality (one line)¶
Hochschild cochains \(\mathrm{HH}^\bullet(A)\) of an associative algebra carry an \(\mathbb{E}_2\)-structure; this is the \(\infty\)-operadic home of the Gerstenhaber bracket and cup product. Formally related to deformation quantization and \(\mathbb{E}_n\)-deformation theory (Lurie, Francis, …).
Factorization homology (pointer)¶
For an \(\mathbb{E}_n\)-algebra \(A\) and a framed \(n\)-manifold \(M\), $$ \int_M A $$ (factorization homology / topological chiral homology) globalizes the algebra by gluing disk algebras along embeddings. Recovers Hochschild homology when \(M=S^1\) and \(A\) is \(\mathbb{E}_1\). Links to topological quantum field theory (costalks, blob complexes) and to derived AG via \(\mathbb{E}_n\)-deformations.
Applications (compact list)¶
| Area | Use of \(\infty\)-operads / \(\mathbb{E}_n\) |
|---|---|
| Spectral algebraic geometry | structure sheaves as \(\mathbb{E}_\infty\)-rings |
| Deformation theory | \(\mathbb{E}_n\)-deformations; shifted symplectic structures (PTVV) use related coherent calculus |
| Goodwillie calculus | derivatives are \(\mathbb{E}_n\)-modules / spectra with multiplications |
| Quantum topology | little disks, formality, configuration spaces |
| Higher algebra of presentables | tensor products of \(\mathrm{Pr}^L\) modules over \(\mathbb{E}_\infty\)-rings |
Modules and monoidal structures¶
Given \(\mathbb{E}_n\)-algebra \(A\) in \(\mathcal{C}\), modules form an \(\infty\)-category \(\mathrm{Mod}_A(\mathcal{C})\) with residual \(\mathbb{E}_{n-1}\)-monoidal structure (HA) — e.g.\ modules over an \(\mathbb{E}_\infty\)-ring form a symmetric monoidal stable \(\infty\)-category; modules over \(A_\infty\)-rings form a monoidal (not symmetric) \(\infty\)-category.
See it¶
Commutative ring spectra. An \(\mathbb{E}_\infty\)-ring spectrum \(R\) is an \(\mathbb{E}_\infty\)-algebra in \(\mathrm{Sp}\). Ordinary commutative rings embed via Eilenberg–MacLane \(H\mathbb{Z}\); rational \(\mathbb{E}_\infty\)-rings relate to cdgas. Spectral schemes (Lurie) glue \(\mathrm{Spec}\) of connective \(\mathbb{E}_\infty\)-rings — the brave new algebra underneath derived algebraic geometry in the spectral branch.
Recognition of loop spaces. If \(X\) is grouplike \(\mathbb{E}_n\)-space, then \(X\simeq \Omega^n Y\) for a pointed space \(Y\) (May’s geometry of iterated loop spaces, \(\infty\)-operadically refined). This is why configuration space models and scanning maps compute homology of \(\Omega^n\Sigma^n X\).
Check¶
Why is an \(\mathbb{E}_1\)-algebra structure weaker than a strictly associative monoid in a monoidal \(\infty\)-category?
Strict monoids require diagrams commuting on the nose in the homotopy category and coherent higher cells fixed by a strict model; \(\mathbb{E}_1\) only asks for a map from the associative \(\infty\)-operad, so associators exist up to homotopy with coherent pentagonoids. In a strictly monoidal model category one can often strictify, but not always in raw \(\infty\)-settings without changing the monoidal structure.
What residual structure do modules over an \(\mathbb{E}_2\)-algebra carry?
An \(\mathbb{E}_1\)-monoidal structure on \(\mathrm{Mod}_A\) (HA): “one dimension of commutativity is spent on the algebra, one remains for modules.”
Pitfalls¶
- \(\mathbb{E}_\infty\) vs \(\mathrm{Comm}\) vs \(P_\infty\): in spaces/spectra these are equivalent as \(\infty\)-operads; in chain complexes over \(\mathbb{Q}\) commutative dg-algebras model \(\mathbb{E}_\infty\), but over \(\mathbb{F}_p\) power operations distinguish them.
- Nonunital vs unital operads change deformation and TQFT statements.
- Colored operads (multicategories) are the right language for many-sorted algebras; monochromatic \(\mathcal{O}(n)\) is the special case.
- “\(A_\infty\)-category” is enrichment in \(\mathbb{E}_1\)-algebras in chain complexes — related but not identical to quasicategories (different models of the same idea in characteristic \(0\)).
