Noncommutative Geometry

Job: extend geometric notions (metric, differential forms, integration, index theory) to noncommutative \(C^*\)- / von Neumann algebras — Connes' spectral triples as the Riemannian package, cyclic cohomology as the de Rham replacement, the local index formula as the NC Atiyah–Singer, the Baum–Connes assembly as the higher-index theorem, and the spectral action as the physics unification.

Core

When the "space" is replaced by a noncommutative algebra \(A\) of observables (quantum tori, leaf spaces of foliations, bad quotients \(X/G\)), classical point-set geometry fails. Noncommutative geometry (NCG) rebuilds metric and differential structure from spectral data of operators, with \(K\)-theory and cyclic cohomology as topological invariants and the spectral action as the Lagrangian principle.

Notation (paper-standard)

  • Spectral triple \((A,H,D)\); \(A\) a dense \(*\)-subalgebra of a \(C^*\)-algebra on \(H\); \(D\) self-adjoint with \([D,a]\) bounded and \((1+D^2)^{-1/2}\) compact.
  • Dirac \(D\); commutator \([D,a]\); nested commutator \([D,a]^{(k)}=[\,[D,a],\dots]\) (\(k\) folds).
  • Connes distance \(d(\varphi,\psi)=\sup\{|\varphi(a)-\psi(a)|:\|[D,a]\|\le 1\}\).
  • Dimension spectrum \(\dim_\mu\): poles of zeta functions \(\zeta_b(s)=\mathrm{Tr}(b|D|^{-s})\) for \(b\) in the algebra generated by \(A\) and \([D,A]\).
  • Cyclic cohomology \(HC^\bullet(A)\); periodic cyclic \(HP^\bullet(A)\) (period 2).
  • Chern–Connes character \(\mathrm{ch}:K_\bullet(A)\to HP^\bullet(A)\).
  • Local index cocycles \(\varphi_k\) (Connes–Moscovici); Wodzicki residue \(\mathrm{Res}\), Dixmier trace \(\mathrm{Tr}_\omega\).
  • Baum–Connes assembly \(\mu:K^\bullet_G(\underline{EG})\to K_\bullet(C^*_r(G))\); crossed product \(A\rtimes_r G\).
  • NC torus \(A_\theta\); unitaries \(U,V\) with \(UV=e^{2\pi i\theta}VU\); derivations \(\delta_1,\delta_2\).
  • Spectral action \(S=\mathrm{Tr}f(D/\Lambda)\); Seeley–DeWitt coefficients \(a_k(D^2)\).

See it

Noncommutative torus \(A_\theta\). Universal \(C^*\)-algebra generated by unitaries \(U,V\) with \(UV=e^{2\pi i\theta}VU\). For irrational \(\theta\), \(A_\theta\) is simple with unique trace \(\tau\); \(K_0(A_\theta)\cong\mathbb{Z}^2\) and the range of \(\tau_*\) is \(\mathbb{Z}+\theta\mathbb{Z}\). Connes–Rieffel Dirac yields a spectral triple with dimension spectrum \(\{2,1,0\}\); the area cyclic 2-cocycle paired with the Rieffel projection recovers the index — see cyclic cohomology.

Check

What commutative data does a spectral triple \((C^\infty(M),L^2(S),D)\) encode for a spin manifold \(M\)?

\(A=C^\infty(M)\) recovers the manifold (Gelfand); \(D\) Dirac operator recovers the Riemannian metric via Connes' distance formula \(d(p,q)=\sup\{|a(p)-a(q)|:\|[D,a]\|\le 1\}\) and the fundamental class for Poincaré duality in \(K\)-homology. Reconstruction (Connes) makes this an iff under the full axiom set.

Why is cyclic cohomology a natural receptacle for NC Chern characters?

Ordinary de Rham cohomology uses graded-commutativity of forms. Cyclic cohomology is the algebraic dual theory for noncommutative algebras that still pairs with \(K\)-theory via Chern–Connes characters, reducing to de Rham / periodic cyclic theory when \(A=C^\infty(M)\) (HKR theorem + Connes' \(S\)-operation).

Pitfalls

  • Algebraic NC geometry (Artin–Schelter, derived noncommutative motives) \(\neq\) Connes analytic NCG — related philosophies, different toolkits.
  • Unbounded spectral triples need domain care; "regularity" and dimension axioms are subtle. The dimension spectrum must be simple/discrete for the local index formula.
  • Morita equivalence identifies geometric "spaces" better than algebra isomorphism — modules matter.
  • Baum–Connes with coefficients is false (Higson–Lafforgue–Skandalis); only the bare assembly is conjectured.
