Ergodic Theory¶
Job: study measure-preserving dynamical systems via invariant measures, asymptotic averages, mixing hierarchy, and entropy — the measurable counterpart of smooth dynamics.
Core¶
A measure-preserving system \((X,\mathcal{B},\mu,T)\) has \(T:X\to X\) measurable with \(\mu\circ T^{-1}=\mu\). Ergodic theory analyzes long-time averages \(\frac1N\sum_{k=0}^{N-1}f\circ T^k\) and classification up to isomorphism.

Notation (paper-standard)¶
- \((X,\mathcal{B},\mu,T)\); \(U_T f=f\circ T\) Koopman unitary on \(L^2\)
- \(h_\mu(T)\) measure-theoretic entropy; \(h_{\mathrm{top}}(T)\) topological
- \(T\) ergodic / weak-mixing / strong-mixing
See it¶
Weyl equidistribution. Translation \(T_\alpha x=x+\alpha\) on \(\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z}\) is uniquely ergodic (Lebesgue) iff \(\alpha\notin\mathbb{Q}\). Birkhoff averages of continuous \(f\) \(\to\int f\) uniformly — equidistribution of \(\{n\alpha\}\) mod \(1\). Prototype of homogeneous dynamics feeding analytic number theory.
Check¶
Why does ergodicity of \(T\) equivalent to: invariant \(f\in L^2\) are a.e.\ constant?
If \(A\) invariant, \(1_A\) invariant; ergodicity \(\Rightarrow\mu(A)\in\{0,1\}\Rightarrow 1_A\) constant a.e. Conversely, spectral: \(U_T f=f\Rightarrow f\) constant when no nontrivial invariant sets; standard implication via approximating indicators.
How can positive entropy coexist with determinism of invertible \(T\)?
Invertibility is measure-theoretic bijectivity; entropy measures information production under partition refinement, not logical determinism of the map as a function.
Pitfalls¶
- Ergodic \(\neq\) mixing: irrational rotation is ergodic (for \(\alpha\) irrational) but not weak-mixing.
- Invariant measure existence on compact spaces needs Krylov–Bogolyubov (topological); not automatic for infinite measure spaces.
- Entropy zero systems can still be complicated (e.g.\ some parabolic systems).
