Gauge Theory — Bundles, Connections, Yang–Mills

Job: Define principal bundles, connections, and curvature; extract Chern–Weil classes; state Yang–Mills equations and the instanton moduli pointer.

Core

Principal bundles

A principal \(G\)-bundle \(\pi:P\to M\) is a smooth free right \(G\)-action on \(P\) with \(M=P/G\) and local trivializations \(P|_U\simeq U\times G\) intertwining the action (\(G\) Lie group).

Transition functions \(g_{\alpha\beta}:U_\alpha\cap U_\beta\to G\) with cocycle \(g_{\alpha\beta}g_{\beta\gamma}=g_{\alpha\gamma}\). Isomorphism classes of bundles \(\leftrightarrow\) Čech cohomology \(H^1(M,G)\) (for discrete \(G\), ordinary; for Lie \(G\), sheaf sense).

Associated bundle: representation \(\rho:G\to\mathrm{GL}(V)\) gives \(E=P\times_\rho V\) with sections \(\leftrightarrow\) \(G\)-equivariant maps \(P\to V\). Matter fields = sections of associated bundles; gauge potentials live on \(P\) (or locally on \(M\)).

Gauge group \(\mathcal{G}\) of \(P\): vertical automorphisms \(\Leftrightarrow\) maps \(M\to G\) when \(P\) trivial; generally sections of \(\mathrm{Ad}P=P\times_{\mathrm{Ad}}G\).

Connections

A connection on \(P\) is a \(\mathfrak{g}\)-valued 1-form \(A\in\Omega^1(P,\mathfrak{g})\) such that:

  1. \(A(\xi_P)=\xi\) for fundamental vector fields \(\xi_P\) of \(\xi\in\mathfrak{g}\);
  2. \(R_g^*A=\mathrm{Ad}_{g^{-1}}A\) (equivariance).

Equivalently: \(G\)-equivariant horizontal distribution \(HP=\ker A\) complementary to vertical \(VP=\ker d\pi\).

Local gauge potential: on trivialization, \(A\) pulls to \(\mathfrak{g}\)-valued 1-form \(A_\alpha\) on \(U_\alpha\); on overlaps $$ A_\beta=g_{\alpha\beta}^{-1}A_\alpha g_{\alpha\beta}+g_{\alpha\beta}^{-1}dg_{\alpha\beta}. $$ Covariant exterior derivative on associated forms: \(d_A=d+[A,\cdot]\) (graded bracket).

Holonomy along loop \(\gamma\): parallel transport element \(h_A(\gamma)\in G\); Ambrose–Singer: Lie algebra of holonomy group generated by curvature at points in the restricted holonomy leaf.

Curvature

$$ F_A=dA+\tfrac12[A,A]\in\Omega^2(P,\mathfrak{g}) $$ (Cartan structure). Horizontal and equivariant \(\Rightarrow\) descends to \(F_A\in\Omega^2(M,\mathrm{Ad}P)\).

Bianchi identity: \(d_A F_A=0\).

Locally \(F=dA+[A,A]\) (matrix conventions vary by \(\tfrac12\)). Under gauge transform \(g\): $$ F\mapsto g^{-1}Fg. $$

\(G\) Interpretation
\(U(1)\) \(F=dA\) ordinary 2-form; Maxwell / EM
\(SU(n)\) nonabelian YM field strength
\(GL(n)\) / frame affine connection; \(F=\) Riemann-type curvature

Chern–Weil theory

Let \(P:\mathfrak{g}^{\otimes k}\to\mathbb{R}\) (or \(\mathbb{C}\)) be \(\mathrm{Ad}\)-invariant symmetric polynomial. Then $$ P(F_A,\ldots,F_A)\in\Omega^{2k}(M) $$ is closed; its de Rham class \([P(F)]\) is independent of \(A\) and is a characteristic class of \(P\).

Class Polynomial Degree
Chern \(c_k\) elementary invariant polynomials of curvature of \(U(n)\) / complex vector bundles \(2k\)
Pontryagin \(p_k\) from \(O(n)\) / real bundles \(4k\)
Euler \(e\) Pfaffian of curvature (\(SO(2m)\)) \(2m\)

Chern–Simons secondary forms: transgress \(P(F)\) when \(P(F)=d\,\mathrm{CS}(A)\) locally; global Chern–Simons action on 3-manifolds for \(G\)-connections.

Yang–Mills

Metric on \(M\) + \(\mathrm{Ad}\)-invariant inner product on \(\mathfrak{g}\) \(\Rightarrow\) Hodge \(*\) on \(\mathrm{Ad}P\)-valued forms. Yang–Mills action $$ S_{\mathrm{YM}}(A)=\tfrac12\int_M |F_A|^2\,d\mathrm{vol}=\tfrac12\int_M\langle F_A\wedge F_A\rangle. $$ *Yang–Mills equation** (critical points): \(d_A^* F_A=0\). With Bianchi \(d_A F_A=0\), this is the harmonic condition for \(F_A\).

Self-dual / anti-self-dual (4D oriented Riemannian): \(*F=\pm F\). Then \(d_A^*F=\mp d_A F=0\) automatically \(\Rightarrow\) instantons solve YM. Absolute minima of \(S_{\mathrm{YM}}\) in a topological sector: $$ S_{\mathrm{YM}}\ge 8\pi^2 |k|,\qquad k=\text{instanton number}=\langle c_2, [M]\rangle $$ (for \(SU(n)\) on closed oriented 4-manifold; equality iff ASD/SD).

Instantons (pointer)

BPST instanton on \(\mathbb{R}^4\) / \(S^4\): charge \(k=1\) ASD connection for \(SU(2)\). ADHM construction: all ASD \(SU(n)\) instantons on \(S^4\) from linear algebra data (matrices satisfying quadratic relations).

Moduli space \(\mathcal{M}_k=\) ASD connections of charge \(k\) modulo gauge: smooth manifold of expected dimension \(8k-3\) for \(SU(2)\) on \(S^4\) (Atiyah–Hitchin–Singer); Uhlenbeck compactification adds bubbled instantons. Donaldson theory uses \(\mathcal{M}_k\) to produce 4-manifold invariants; Seiberg–Witten later simplified parts of the program.

See it

Aharonov–Bohm. \(M=\mathbb{R}^3\setminus\mathrm{solenoid}\simeq S^1\times\mathbb{R}^2\); flat \(U(1)\)-connection with nontrivial holonomy \(e^{i\oint A}\) around the hole. \(F=0\) in the accessible region, yet parallel transport detects \(A\) — holonomy, not local \(F\), is the gauge-invariant content for flat connections.

Dirac monopole. \(U(1)\)-bundle over \(S^2\) of Chern number \(\pm 1\); no global smooth \(A\) on all of \(S^2\). Local potentials on hemispheres differ by transition \(e^{i\phi}\); curvature integrates to \(2\pi\times\text{charge}\).

Check

Derive the local transformation law of \(F\) from that of \(A\) for matrix groups.

\(A'=g^{-1}Ag+g^{-1}dg\). Then \(dA'=d(g^{-1})Ag+g^{-1}dA g-g^{-1}A\,dg+d(g^{-1})dg+g^{-1}d^2g\) (and \(d^2=0\)). Adding \(A'\wedge A'\) cancels pure gauge terms and yields \(F'=g^{-1}Fg\). (Track wedge/Lie bracket conventions carefully.)

Why do SD connections automatically solve YM in 4D?

\(*F=F\) \(\Rightarrow\) \(d_A^*F=*d_A**F=\pm *d_A F\) (Hodge identities on 2-forms in 4D, sign by convention/orientation). Bianchi \(d_A F=0\Rightarrow d_A^*F=0\).

Pitfalls

  • Global vs local \(A\): treating \(A\) as a globally defined \(\mathfrak{g}\)-valued form on \(M\) assumes a trivial bundle (or a fixed trivialization).
  • Gauge fixing: slice theorems (Coulomb) needed for moduli; reducible connections make stabilizers positive-dimensional and singularities in \(\mathcal{M}\).
  • Lorentzian YM \(\neq\) Riemannian instantons: energy, causality, and \(*F=\pm F\) (which needs \(*^2=\pm1\) on 2-forms) depend on signature.
  • Conventions: physicists’ \(F=dA-ie[A,A]\) vs mathematicians’ \(dA+[A,A]\); factors of \(2\) in Chern–Weil normalization.
